Mustang Bullitt 50th Anniversary
Meeting up with Charlie Aquilina at Bahrija
A few weeks ago I was in Bahrija and like most of my Sunday mornings I was there enjoying a coffee and taking photos of interesting cars passing by. Even those just parked in front of me such as Jesmond Carauana’s A-Team film car, a Corvette C4. Little did I know that there was another film car in the crowd before Jesmond pointed it out!

This was a 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt as it was pointed out in the badge! This was the 50th Anniversary model (S550 model) to commemorate the amazing car chase film ‘Bullitt’ with Steve McQueen as Frank Bullitt at the wheel.
The actual car in the movie was a Ford Mustang GT390. It also had a white cueball as a gearknob for the manual gearbox and the paintwork was Dark Highland Green. These three characteristics are featured in each and every Bullitt edition.
I then continued talking to the owner Charlie Aquilina, a Maltese national who has been resident in London since 1972, who is also a member of Simply Mustangs UK, currently on his European trip with the car. Charlie organises local meets for this club, within the London area.

I also asked Charlie, the owner, how he ended up here with the car and what’s the story behind his registration number ‘50TC’ as it must have meant something to the car being a 50th Anniversary car but to my surprise this wasn’t the case.
He was here as it was his wish to drive it down to Malta, his home country before his 70th Birthday which was a few days ago, he also showcased his car on 2nd June at the Malta National Aquarium with a local Ford Mustang Club.

Regarding the plate, it was a just a registration number that ended up on a car he bought years back, but his friends encouraged him to keep as it suited him since he was known as ‘Tall Charlie’ in the UK.

When I kept in touch with Charlie he also shared a very interesting article with his car, where it was featured on ‘Classic and Sports Car’ magazine (December 2023 issue). This was amongst other 3 Mustangs, including the original ’68.

We hope you enjoyed reading this article and if you know of any other cars we should write about email us on: [email protected].
